New Tower on Wachusett Mountain an Investment in the Commonwealth

(NECN: Kristen Doucet) – We shift our attention to a celebration that's been years and millions of dollars in the making.

A project aimed at preserving access to one of the most beautiful peaks in central Massachusetts is finally complete.

This new 80-foot steel fire tower now sits on the summit of the Wachusett Mountain state reservation in Princeton.

The structure replaces the old tower which was built in 1966.

“This really helps stop fires, forest fires, before they can spread and become big complications so this very important technology and one that we know keeps the region safe,” says Ed Lambert.

The state cut a ribbon for the tower which is the centerpiece of a 8.4 million dollar rehabilitation and summit enhancement project.

The tower includes a public observation deck which provides a view of Mount Monadnock, the Berkshires and the Boston skyline.

The DCR says thousands of people visit Wachusett Mountain reservation every year.

“Our governor and lieutenant governor, who is from this part of the state, wanted to see this investment happen because is about the quality of life for people who live in and around here and we were happy to help make that happen,” says DCR commissioner Lambert.

The project includes new parking areas, more space for pedestrians and roadway improvements.

Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rick Sullivan says the renovation of the five-mile parkway leading up to the summit will greatly improve access for all visitors.

“Just a few years ago, this was a disorganized, scattered spot up here, parking was difficult, travel up to the summit was impossible and it certainly wasn't an enjoyable experience,” Sullivan says.

He also says the Wachusett Mountain enhancement project is more than a recreational investment.

Sullivan says it's an investment into our local economy.

“Wachusett Mountain is an iconic park, the park sees a large number of visitor's every single day that spend money in the local economy; it’s an investment that will pay dividends for the Commonwealth moving forward.”
