Police Search for Prisoner Who Escaped Boston Courthouse

(NECN: Tom Langford, Saugus, Mass.) - This is the man who police are looking for, 20-year-old Stephen Woodard.

He was being transported in a Suffolk County Sheriff Department then when he escaped as the van made a stop at East Boston District Court.
Woodard then stole this Boston DPW pickup truck, which was parked with the keys inside, and led police on a winding chase through Chelsea, Boston, Everett, and Revere.

At this construction site along route 107 in Saugus, he ditched the truck, jumped into the river, and swam to the other side.

That prompted a massive police search.
Dozens of officers formed a perimeter, while others on foot and with dogs searched through the marsh area.

Overhead, a state police helicopter hovered for an hour -- scanning the marsh with an infrared camera.
But in the end, police found no sign of Woodard -- and called off the search.

At the time he escaped, Woodard was on his way to Charlestown District Court to face drug charges.
Police say Woodard has a long criminal record that included a recentarrest for robbing a man at knife point and assaulting three Bostonpolice officers.
