Pressure Mounts as Toyota's Troubles Go Global

(NECN/ABC) - As the Toyota recall grows, Japan's trade minister Friday called on the world's largest automaker to reclaim the confidence of car buyers.

The mystery of what caused certain models to accelerate without notice continues, amid reports that Toyota had received complaints of runaway cars for years.

The Indiana pedal supplier says Toyota told it this part was not responsible for any of the serious accidents or deaths linked to runaway vehicles.

"They acknowledged that they did not cause any accidents or injuries related to that condition of the pedal," Mitch Walorski of CTS Corporation said.

Reports of these incidents coincided with the company's use of computers to control acceleration, a move seen by some industry analysts as a cost cutting measure.

"I think the bulk of the problems that we're seeing have nothing to do with some kind of accelerator pedal or with the floor mats," Sean Kane of Safety Research & Strategies. "It has to do with other components in these vehicles, most likely in the electronics."

Millions of cars have been recalled in the United States, China, and Europe, with industry experts expecting the number to grow. Overwhelmed dealers don not have resolution.

"We don't have a good answer for them right now," Bob Page of Page Toyota said.

"Toyota is working diligently to get this fix done," Steve Crane of Stone Mountain Toyota in Stone Mountain, Georgia said.

The House Commerce Committee has announced hearings next month to investigate the Toyota issue.

ABC's Viviana Hurtado reports.
