Review: Papagallo

(TV Diner) - With a Spanish name that translates into kite, Papagallo is fairly new to the Attleboro, Mass. dining scene, quickly earning a soaring reputation for its multicultural cuisine.

A light, airy atmosphere with red, black and silver accents and a large menu that travels the world make for one family-friendly establishment…but are the charming vibe and wide-range of selections enough to have us looking skyward in pleasure?

We started our culinary tour with a trio of pupusas - delectable Salvadorian handmade masa-pockets filled with beans, pulled pork and cheese, served with a piquant vinegar cabbage.

Have to say that a large bowl of Japanese-inspired steamed edamame tossed in garlic, olive oil and crushed red pepper left us wanting for more. Soybeans never tasted so good.

Puerto Rico was the destination for two amazing entrees.

The mofongo relleno was unlike anything we have ever seen. An orb of fried, mashed green plantains seasoned with pulled pork cracklings and filled with tender strips of steak was almost too pretty to eat…but that didn't stop us from devouring this intensely flavored dish.
And the pollo asado, a succulent half roasted chicken kissed by Puerto Rican spices, served with rice and outstanding beans could not have been improved upon. Pure perfection.

Just when we thought the meal couldn't get any better, out came the tres leches cake, Papagallo's version of the traditional Latin American "three milk" dessert. The tender saturated cake topped by meringue and cinnamon was flawless.

And a plate of homemade churros, served with ice cream and caramel sauce had us shaking our heads in wonder - it was that good.
Service was first-rate at Papagallo. Our charming waitress paced the meal with precision, and we were pleased when one of the owners stopped by our table to see how we were enjoying the meal.

Value is high at Papagallo with appetizers $3.95 to $8.95; sandwiches averaging $7.95; entrees $9.95 to $21.95; and desserts $2.95 to $6.95. And all items on the kids menu are priced at $6.95.

For its stylish atmosphere, extraordinary, well-executed menu and skillful service, Papagallo will earn the Platinum Plate.
