(TV Diner) - Boston recently welcomed its second Smith & Wollensky - this time to a prime locale on Atlantic Wharf, overlooking the harbor. A magnificent exhibition kitchen, outdoor patio, lively bar, lush lounge and posh wood and leather furnishings are but a few of the amenities of this 10,000 square-foot eatery known for high quality steaks and seafood.
But did we find it a cut above the competition?
Impressive best describes the Wollensky salad, served tableside with flair. Crisp romaine, heritage tomatoes, potato croutons, bacon and marinated mushrooms bathed in aromatic vinaigrette was incredible.
Ditto for the sumptuous crab cake. With barely a bit of filler, this golden round drizzled with grain mustard buerre blanc and paired with cole slaw was beyond delicious.
We then took fork and knife to the deconstructed rib eye, a signature dish featuring a prime cut of beef, braised rib ragu with shallots, garlic and morel mushrooms, served alongside roasted bone marrow. A carnivore's dream if ever there was one.
On to an enormous portion of Colorado lamb. The three double-cut chops with rosemary au jus were tender and perfectly seasoned.
Side dishes are a la carte at Smith & Wollensky and large enough for two or more. Have to say we were delighted with the sautéed green beans and hashed brown potatoes we chose to go along with our meaty entrées.

The dessert menu arrived and we couldn't resist. The extravagant-looking cream-filled coconut cake was mighty moist and outrageously good.
And the thinly stretched apple tart topped with spiced fruit, caramel and vanilla ice cream was rich and satisfying.
Service was impeccable. The meal was paced with precision and everyone from the host to our charming server to other members of the staff treated us like VIPs.
Be aware that a meal at Smith & Wollensky falls under the special event category with appetizers from $7 to $30; entrees $26 to $59; side dishes averaging $10; and desserts $10.
