Teen Shot in Roxbury on the Mend

(NECN: John Monahan, Boston) - Inside a Dorchester church, Pastor Nigel David and his flock pray for one of their own.

A 13 year old junior deacon gunned down on his way to choir practice there Friday night.

"It’s shocking but it’s the reality of the times we live in," said Pastor David.

The pastor visited the young victim Saturday morning at Boston Medical Center. He says his junior deacon is on the mend.

"He’s making a recovery and so far he’s doing well," Pastor David said.

The Boston Police Homicide Unit is actively looking for the shooter who was possibly in a grey vehicle but most importantly a motive. Everyone who knows the young victim speaks highly of him. That includes the church’s treasurer, JD Chery.

"He’s very quiet, just 13 years old. He goes to school and is a deacon. He participates in every event we have," Chery said.

And that’s what makes this shooting so strange for people in this congregation. The reason the teen was shot is unclear. That has the head of the church’s school board, Dr. Kahris McLaughlin, worried that violence in this neighborhood after this latest shooting has gone too far.

"When it gets to this point that a mom feels she can’t send her child to church, this boy only had to walk three or four blocks, when it gets to that point it’s scary," she said.
