(NECN) – After day one of the two-day sentencing hearing for James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Boston, some victims’ family members spoke to the media gathered outside Moakley Federal Courthouse.
First to speak was Sean McGonagle, the son of Paul McGonagle.
“It’s behind us now, we don’t really want to get into much more,” he said of his family’s experience.
McGonagle said he was surprised Bulger didn’t speak.
“I was surprised he didn’t speak, you know, with his ego, that he did not want to speak to any of the families that addressed him. He never looked me in the eye. He never looked a lot of the families in the eye.”
When asked about a personal Christmas story, he said it was kind of personal, but went on to say:
“He just called my house, I said. ‘whose this?’ He said, ‘you’ll never see your father again.’ I asked who it was, he said it was Santa Claus, but I’m a lot bigger than I was back then, so it’s good to see him where he is and he belongs where he is and he’ll be in that jail cell for a long time we hope.”
McGonagle said, when it comes to Bulger, “You’ve gotta know what you’re dealing with with him, it’s total psychopath I would say…growing up in the same town you realize how truly evil he was. You’re looking at pure evil when you look hi in the eye like I have a few times.”
He said his uncle was killed for looking like his dad, which is pretty hard to take.
McGonagle also said Bulger is just a coward and the sentencing hearing showed it when he wouldn’t look up at victims’ families.
“He keeps his head down, and I hope he keeps his head down in prison, you know, so he’ll get it in there.”
