Whitey Bulger Returns to Boston After California Arrest

(NECN: Scot Yount, Boston, Mass.) - James "Whitey" Bulger is back in Boston, Massachusetts.

The mobster was captured in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday night -- along with his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig. Bulger had been on the run for 16 years.

The Mob boss is wanted in connection with 19 murders.

Bulger and Greig will make initial court appearances at the John Joseph Moakley federal courthouse in Boston, Mass.

Bulger is the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang.

The Special Agent-In-Charge of the Boston Division, Richard DesLauriers, is releasing the following statement relating to the arrest of James J. Bulger and Catherine Greig:

"There has been some speculation that the FBI knew about the location of Mr. Bulger prior to the initiation of the FBI's most recent publicity campaign regarding Catherine Greig and James J. "Whitey" Bulger.

To ensure that there is no misunderstanding about the FBI's search for Mr. Bulger, I want to reiterate statements I made earlier on this matter.

Any claim that the FBI knew Mr. Bulger's whereabouts prior to the FBI's publicity efforts this week are completely unfounded. When we learned his location, he was arrested promptly.

The FBI crafted a media plan to reach as many people as possible. As is now evident, this effort was successful and led directly to the arrest of Mr. Bulger, and highlights the importance of the public's assistance in these matters."
