Before and After a Summer Storm

Widely scattered thunderstorms pushed into coastal Maine, Cape Cod Wednesday afternoon

Widely scattered thunderstorms pushed though late Wednesday afternoon across coastal Maine and Cape Cod along a front separating the incoming dry air and the more humid air with dewpoints in the 60's. Everyone is clearing out across New England Wednesday evening with lows dropping into the 50's and lwr 60's. There's a more comfortable evening with drier air in place.

Here are a few pictures from Cape Cod Wednesday afternoon, which show the drama of the incoming storms, the localized flash flooding and then finally, the beautiful rainbow signifying the departing storm as the emerging sunshine reflects off of the raindrops. Barnstable picked up over 3 inches of rain in those storms, which came with plenty of lightning as well.

Thursday will be a similar day with sunshine to start off the morning. Clouds will quickly build and we will see another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon. With cooler air moving in aloft, more instability with greater lapse rates will be in place. Scattered storms will contain some large hail along with locally heavy rain and frequent lightning. The best timing for storm development will be between noon and 6 p.m.

This final front will push off the coast, with building high pressure sliding in for the weekend. This will set the stage for numerous days of sunshine, light winds and low humidity. Sea breezes will keep temps in the 70's at the coast. Meanwhile, inland temps will range from 80 to 85 inland this weekend. Temperatures will warm into the mid 80s' right into the start of next week.
