Blizzard Conditions Confirmed in Parts of Mass.

It's official: parts of Southeastern Massachusetts met blizzard conditions Saturday afternoon.

A blizzard has nothing to do with how much snow falls. Instead, it is related to strong winds and low visibility. A location needs three or more consecutive hours of 35 MPH winds, along with visibilities below a quarter of a mile, for a blizzard to occur.

On Nantucket, those conditions happened for 4 hours from 12:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Chatham also had 4 hours of blizzard conditions stretching from 1:15 PM to 5:45 p.m.

Martha's Vineyard endured the blizzard between 12:30 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., also a 4 hour span.

Farther up the coast, Plymouth reported blizzard conditions for 3.5 hours from 2:15-5:55 p.m.

Marshfield just met the criteria, with a blizzard reported for three hours from 3:15-6:15 p.m.

Falmouth, Hyannis, and New Bedford came up just shy of full blizzard criteria.

In Rhode Island, Newport had near blizzard conditions for a time, as did Block Island. However, there was a 7 hour outage in weather reports on Block Island during the storm, so it's impossible to say for sure if a blizzard occurred. Odds favor it happening though.
