Police are investigating after a motorist crashed into a Portsmouth home built in 1848 and fled the scene.
The Portsmouth Herald reports the accident happened Tuesday around 2:15 a.m. at a home on Woodbury Avenue that sits along a sharp corner. The homeowners reported hearing a loud crash, but the vehicle was already gone when officers arrived.
Deputy Fire Chief James Heinz says the impact pushed a first-floor wall in about four to six inches. Firefighters determined the home's antique post-and-beam frame remained intact.
Lt. Chris Cummings says a license plate was left at the scene. Police have tracked down the owner, who they believe was driving at the time of the incident. A warrant is being drafted for the driver's arrest on conduct after an accident charges.
