When firefighters responded to a a multi-family home at 45 Hillside Street just before 11 p.m., they were told that one person was trapped inside, but heavy smoke and fire prevented crews from entering the home until they were able to bring the blaze under control.

Once they were able to go inside, emergency crews found Appell on the second floor, according to fire officials. He died in the fire, officials said.
