A 40-year-old man was killed in a fire in Meriden, Connecticut, on Wednesday night and police have identified him as Kevin Appell.
When firefighters responded to a a multi-family home at 45 Hillside Street just before 11 p.m., they were told that one person was trapped inside, but heavy smoke and fire prevented crews from entering the home until they were able to bring the blaze under control.
Once they were able to go inside, emergency crews found Appell on the second floor, according to fire officials. He died in the fire, officials said.
Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue the man, but are recovering this morning.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
