Connecticut Man Sentenced for Drunk Driving

The charge stemmed from an October 2011 crash in Westfield

A Connecticut man who was driving drunk when he caused a fatal crash in New Jersey has been sentenced to four years in prison.

A judge imposed the sentence Friday after Robert McGowan's lawyer asked that he receive probation. The 30-year-old Trumbull man had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in August.

The charge stemmed from an October 2011 crash in Westfield.

Authorities say McGowan was driving drunk and speeding when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a car driven by 69-year-old Peter Tyliczka, who was thrown from his vehicle.

Tyliczka died from his injuries. His then-61-year-old girlfriend, a passenger in his car, was seriously injured.

McGowan was elected to the Trumbull Town Council shortly before he was indicted in November 2015. But he resigned a short time later.
