The former chief of staff to the Connecticut House Republicans has pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud for taking more than $100,000 in payments from a political campaign direct mail company to which steered business.
The Connecticut U.S. Attorney's office announced that 46-year-old George Gallo waived his right to indictment and entered his plea Monday before U.S. District Judge Vanessa Bryant in Hartford. He was released on $200,000 bail.
Part of Gallo's job was to set up coordinated campaign support for Republican state House candidates. Prosecutors said he lied to his boss, the House minority leader, and others about having a financial relationship with the direct mail company. He resigned in February 2014 in the midst of an FBI investigation.
Gallo faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at sentencing July 29.
