Firefighters in South Burlington, Vermont, have rescued a construction worker in a trench who was pinned against a pipe after the dirt walls collapsed around him.

Firefighters say the worker was taken to UVM Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries Monday.

The worker was in trench that was 3 feet wide, 5 to 6 feet deep and 30 feet long. It was dug for a drainage project at the Orchard School. Deputy Chief Terry Francis says there was a lot of water in the storm sewer, which may have caused the walls to fall in.

Fire officials say the safety of the work site is now being investigated.
