From Hot to Cool Again

The weather today has been beautiful, but it’s about 30 degrees cooler than it was yesterday

From 90s to 50s, record breaking heat to below average temperatures, sweating to shivering. Don’t get me wrong, the weather today has been beautiful, but it’s about 30 degrees cooler than it was yesterday.

The city of Boston recorded it first heatwave of 2017! In order to be considered a “heatwave” you need three consecutive days with temperatures at or above 90°. Wednesday the temperature climbed to 92°, Thursday the heat peaked at 95° and Friday the high temperature was 90°. The most recent May heatwave was in 2001, but it occurred much earlier in the month, between May 2nd and 4th. May heatwaves are rare. This is the fourth in Boston’s climatological history – the others happening in 1929 and 1931. Going into this heat, May temperatures were below average – it only took three days and now the average temperature for the month is above average.

The cold from certainly left its mark. It moved through Friday afternoon/evening. Temperatures and dew points dropped SIGNIFICANTLY! High temperatures in Boston only reached the upper 50s Saturday. Inland locations were a bit warmer, but were still a lot cooler than Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Water temperatures are still around 50°, so anytime we have an easterly component to the wind, dress in layers.

I think we’re done with the heat for the next 10 days. Our weather pattern will turn unsettled once again. After one more sunny day Sunday, clouds arrive Sunday night and rain returns on Monday. It won’t be a wash out, but a half inch of rain is likely with high temperatures in the 50s. On and off showers will persist through the remainder of the week with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Fingers crossed, the unsettled weather moves out in time for the holiday weekend. Stay tuned!
