Harmful Bacteria Found In Local Pond

Blue-green algae found in Shrewsbury's Dean Park Pond

Blue-green algae bacteria are causing more problems in central Massachusetts.

Health officials are warning residents to stay away from Dean Park Pond in Shrewsbury after high levels of the bacteria were detected.

Last month, Worcester's Indian Lake was closed indefinitely because of the same problem.

Contact with the infected water can cause health issues such as skin irritation and liver damage.

Officials say they’re working with environmental health specialists to test the algae in the pond.

In the mean time, residents are advised to keep pets away from the pond as well. It could take up to three weeks before a decision to reopen the pond is made.
