Human Remains Found in Alleged Unlicensed Funeral Director's Storage Facility

Joseph O’Donnell was charged in April with taking money from customers who had prepaid funerals at the Dorchester funeral home

On Thursday, a search warrant led authorities to the recovery of human remains connected to a man who allegedly operated a funeral home without a license, the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed.

Joseph O’Donnell was arrested in April. At that time, he was charged with taking money from customers who had prepaid funerals at the Dorchester funeral home. He is currently in custody for those larceny charges.

The search took place at at storage unit at 1470 Main Street in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Multiple adult remains were recovered from the site. The remains were transferred to the custody of the Chief Medical Examiner's office.

It is not believed the bodies are the result of the foul play, but the circumstances surrounding their placement in the storage facility is under investigation.

Authorities searched another storage facility in Somerville, Massachusetts on Wednesday, where they discovered cremated remains and have launched an investigation into their origin.

Police and prosecutors are also investigating the validity of funeral arrangements for which O’Donnell took money, including arrangements he allegedly undertook after his funeral director’s license had lapsed in 2008.
