Town officials say dangerous rip currents off Old Orchard Beach in Maine led to five rescues involving ten people in danger of drowning.
Lifeguard captain Keith Willett tells the Portland Press Herald that the surf conditions at the beach on Monday were extremely dangerous.
He says the most challenging rescue happened at around 3 p.m. when an 8-year-old girl and her uncle got pulled offshore by a rip current. Their boogie boards kept them afloat, but they were 200 yards offshore by the time lifeguards noticed them.
Willett says it took four lifeguards about 25 minutes to bring them back to shore. Three other rescues happened near The Pier and in front of a restaurant off West Grand Avenue. No one was hospitalized.
