Accidental Death Ruling After 5-Year-Old Shoots Herself

The state medical examiner's office ruled Elise Dorr's death as accidental

A Maine family is asking for time to "grieve and heal" after the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl at her grandparents' home.

The state medical examiner's office ruled Elise Dorr's death as accidental, saying she picked up her father's gun and shot herself in the head.

In a statement released Wednesday, Elise's grandfather Robert McKee Jr. calls the girl's death "a tragedy beyond our imagination."

State police say Elise had found a .45-caliber handgun owned by her father, Todd Dorr, in a backpack. The gun wasn't in a holster, and there was no gunlock.

Dorr told police he was adjusting a television at the Scarborough home on Monday when he heard a gunshot.

No charges have been filed. The investigative report will be reviewed by prosecutors.
