City Approves Memorial for Fatal Apartment Fire

An arts committee in Maine's largest city has given approval for a temporary memorial to six people who died in an apartment fire last year.

The deadly Noyes Street fire in Portland is approaching its anniversary on Nov. 1. Some supporters of the memorial are surprised by some of the city's conditions.

The Portland Press Herald reports the city's Temporary Art Review Panel approved the installation for three months. The subcommittee of relatives and others who have worked to raise money for the memorial wanted five months.

The city also says the sculpture can be lit from dusk until 9 p.m. The committee asked for it to be lit to 10 p.m.

The city is also passing most of the cost of extending electricity to the committee.
