Cops: Man Sets Home on Fire, Shoots Himself

Officials say the fire was reported around noon Sunday and caused extensive damage to the home

Authorities say a Maine man shot himself after he set his mobile home on fire.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, says 49-year-old Donald Shores Jr. died Sunday in Oakland from a gunshot wound to the head. He says a handgun was found next to him in the home's bathroom.

Officials say the fire was reported around noon Sunday and caused extensive damage to the home. No one else was injured and there were no other occupants in the house at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators say it appears Shores used gasoline to start the fire in the living room, then retreated to his bedroom where he shot himself.

He died after emergency responders took him to a Waterville hospital.
