A city council in southwestern Maine is electing not to suspend its police chief and deputy chief amid a sex assault investigation by the state Attorney General's Office.
The Biddeford City Council voted 6-2 in favor of a resolution not suspending Police Chief Roger Beaupre and Deputy Police Chief Joanne Fisk at an executive session Monday.
Accusers and neighbors have called on the council to suspend the two at several community meetings.
The Maine Attorney General's Office is investigating claims of sexual assault involving a former Biddeford police officer and a teenage boy from the late 1990s.
A lawyer for the police chief and deputy chief has referred all comment to the mayor. The lawyer is being provided by the city, per state law.
