DHHS Official Pleads Not Guilty to OUI

Joan Smyrski entered a not-guilty plea to the misdemeanor count

The associate director for the Maine Office of Substance Abuse has pleaded not guilty to operating under the influence.

The Sun Journal reports that the attorney for 62-year-old Joan Smyrski entered a not-guilty plea to the misdemeanor count on her behalf in a Franklin County court. The plea was received on Oct. 19.

Authorities say the Jefferson woman was charged with drunken driving after being stopped Sept. 25 in the town of Avon. She was freed on $150 cash bail.

A date for her next court appearance hasn't been set.
