A series of small earthquakes rattled residents of Maine Wednesday night.
The first earthquake struck around 6:47 PM, according to the United States Geological Survey, and registered as a magnitude 2.6
Its epicenter was located near Richmond, Maine, in Sagadahoc County. That’s roughly between Augusta and Portland.
Residents told our meteorologist Michael Page that they felt it in towns like Bowdoin and Wiscasset, with other reports of light shaking coming from as far south as Falmouth and as far north as Hallowell.
About an hour after the first quake, which some people thought was a loud plow passing by their home, the USGS reports two other small quakes also hit near Richmond.
Those were rated magnitude 1.9 & 1.8 respectively.
Small earthquakes like this do happen occasionally in New England, but widespread damage is rare.
