EPA Delays Stricter Standards for New Lobster Boat Engines

The Environmental Protection Agency is giving a break to Maine's lobster industry by delaying new clean-air standards for some marine diesel engines.

Maine's congressional delegation says there are no diesel engines meeting the Tier IV standard that can safely fit on lobster boats. They say the delay will ensure there are engines available as the industry continues to work toward cleaner diesel engines.

In a joint statement, the congressional delegation called the delay "a commonsense solution that supports Maine boat builders and lobstermen."

EPA New England Acting Regional Administrator Deborah Szaro called it a "win-win" for boat builders and lobstermen, "and allows Maine's vibrant fishing economy to continue."
