Fairfield, Maine Mother Held Without Bail in Infant Son's Murder

Kayla Stewart was arrested at her home on Friday afternoon

A Maine mother charged with the murder of her infant son is being held without bail after her first court appearance in Skowhegan Monday afternoon.

Kayla Stewart, 20, of Fairfield, has been charged with intentional or knowing murder, or conduct that manifested in depraved indifference to the value of human life that caused the death of an unnamed male infant.

Stewart did not enter a plea on Monday, but appeared to be crying as the judge read the charges.

Police say the remains of a full term baby were found in Stewart's garage on Jan. 11. According to court documents, the baby died sometime around Dec. 31, 2015.

The affidavit has been sealed, and investigators have not explained how or why the baby died.

Neighbors told NECN they were shocked to learn about the baby's death, and say they did not know she was pregnant.

"I would just like to know why she did it," said neighbor George Parker. "I mean, it's your own kid, you know?"

Police say the baby's father, Nicholas Blood, was living in the home on Norridgewock Road. He has not been charged with any crimes.

"I think they should charge the guy too," said Parker. "He lived there, and he should know what's going on."

In court, Stewart's family was visibly upset, shaking and crying. They declined to comment on the case.

Stewart will have a harnish hearing to determine her bail. The court date has not yet been set.

Police say Stewart has a three year old child, who is now staying with other relatives.
