Festival Removing Certain Rides After Malfunctions Cause Injuries

The Friends of Windjammer Days removed rides belonging to Smokey's Greater Shows

Organizers of an upcoming festival in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, are removing certain carnival rides from their program over safety concerns.

The Kennebec Journal reports
the Friends of Windjammer Days removed rides belonging to Smokey's Greater Shows. Four people were injured last week while on their rides at a Waterville fair.

The group, which runs the annual celebration of the region's boating history, says it is being cautious, and is not ruling out working with Smokey's in the future.

Officials with other summer festivals said Tuesday they will keep the company's rides, due to lengthy previous relationships and good safety records.

The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating Friday's accident, in which a miniature rollercoaster ride malfunctioned and came apart while carrying children. Three children suffered minor injuries.
