Hawk Native to South America Rescued from Maine Snowstorm

Maine residents have helped rescue a hawk native to Central and South America from a recent snowstorm.

Terra Fletcher says she and her husband were skiing in Portland's Deering Oaks Park Sunday when they found the great black hawk lying in the snow and another person trying to help it.

Fletcher, who has experience as a falconer, got the hawk into a box and called the rehabilitation center Avian Haven so volunteers could collect it.

Avian Haven says the bird was standing up and looking alert as of Monday.

They say the hawk appears to have frostbite on its feet, and it is unclear if or when it can be released.

The hawk is believed to be the same bird spotted in Maine in early August.
