Police in Bangor, Maine, say a large sinkhole has opened near the city's downtown area.
The Sinkhole, which is 12-feet-wide and 30-feet-deep, is located on Hammond Street near the old courthouse.
Police are advising drivers to avoid Hammond Street Tuesday.
The Associated Press reports that the sinkhole is the result of a collapsed sewer pipe dating to the 1870s.
Public works crews are digging up the road to merge the old piping with new PVC piping. The work could continue into Wednesday morning, but crews are hopeful that traffic will be flowing smoothly again by Tuesday night.
