The lawyer for a Maine man on trial for killing his girlfriend and her two children says he confessed because he felt responsible for failing to protecting them.
The defense told jurors Wednesday that Keith Coleman's statements don't mean he committed the crime and that it's likely the killings were committed by more than one person.
Prosecutors say Coleman not only confessed, but told others he would have no problem killing his whole family just days before they were killed Garland in December 2014.
The 29-year-old Coleman is on trial for three counts of murder in the deaths of 36-year-old Christina Sargent, 10-year-old Duwayne Coke and 8-year-old Destiny Sargent.
Police say Coleman told them he chased down and strangled the children because they had witnessed their mother's death.
