Maine Drought Task Force to Meet for First Time in Years

The task force's meeting Thursday in Augusta will examine and discuss the potential risks from the dry weather

For the first time in several years, the Maine Drought Task Force has called a meeting in response to the unusually dry weather the state has experienced this summer.

The Kennebec Journal reports the task force's meeting Thursday in Augusta will examine and discuss the potential risks from the dry weather, such as the drying up of wells and an increased chance of wildfires in the fall.

The task force is comprised of public safety officials and weather experts from various state and federal agencies.

Sean Goodwin, director of the Kennebec County Emergency Management Agency, says the group hasn't required a meeting for a number of years because there hasn't been an issue.

Officials say Augusta will soon register the lowest water levels the state has seen for August.
