Two people are dead following a two-car crash in Litchfield, and charges are pending against the driver who survived, Maine State Police say.
Around 7:39 p.m., state police received an erratic operation-related complaint in Litchfield. About 10 minutes later, a crash was reported to dispatchers.
Officials say the fatal collision occurred just before 8 p.m. Saturday when a sport utility vehicle apparently crossed the centerline on Hallowell Road and hit a pickup truck that was traveling in the other direction.
Police say 48-year-old Derek Trudeau and his wife 40-year-old Stephanie Trudeau, both of Litchfield, were killed upon impact. The Trudeaus were travelling to pick up their 9-year-old child from a friend's house.
The driver of the vehicle that apparently crossed the centerline was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. He was identified by officials as 60-year-old Shawn Metayer, of Litchfield.
Troopers believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and say charges are pending Metayer's release from the hospital.
