Maine Man's Jar Jar Binks Tattoo Causes Disturbance in Force

A Maine man’s body art has grabbed the attention of Twitter, Barstool Sports and Star Wars fan sites.

Last year, Mich Ouellette, of South Portland, Maine, had his entire back tattooed with the likeness of Star Wars alien, Jar Jar Binks.

Binks, a key character in the 1999 film, "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," is disliked to say the least, by many Star Wars fans who found his portrayal goofy and immature.

Ouellette takes a different view.

"I like the prequels and I like Jar Jar," he said. "I understand why people don’t like Jar Jar, but over time he grew on me and I like him. I thought it would be funny after a while to just get a Jar Jar tattoo and shut people up."

Which is exactly what he did.

He called his friend tattoo artist, Chris Dingwell, at Squirrel Cage Studios in Portland.

Dingwell loved Ouellette’s idea for a Jar Jar inspired by comedian and actor, Steve-O and didn’t hesitate to take on the job of a "technically perfect" Jar Jar Binks.

Ouellette’s tattoo, in grayscale, is two feet in length and shows the alien giving a thumbs up.

Below the smiling space creature, a line reads, "Oie boie, mesa bombad."

"That’s how I imagine Jar Jar saying, 'yeah dude, I rock,'"said Ouellette.

Ouellette has been getting many thumbs up from people online as images of his tattoo circulate around the internet.

In Portland, he’s been asked repeatedly to take his shirt off at a local bowling alley where he’s in a league.

Still, he’s also had to defend himself from people who question his status as a "nerd."

"I don’t live in my parents’ basement, I have a job, I’m married," he said.

As for his wife, Ouellette says she was very supportive telling him, “you have to do it.”

She has her own a Star Wars tattoo of R2-D2 that matches one Ouellette has of C-3PO.

Asked what he thinks people 30-50 years from 2019 will think of his Jar Jar Binks spread across his shoulders, Ouellette expects their reaction will be positive.

The one thing he hopes doesn’t catch on, a fan theory that Jar Jar is secretly a Sith lord.

His thought on that, "I hate it."
