South Portland, Maine, will join a number of other communities in the state regulating the retail use of plastic bags Tuesday.
The new rule requires food retailers charge 5 cents a bag for both single use paper and plastic bags, WCSH reports. Those retailers are also prohibited from using styrofoam coffee cups and takeout containers.
Violators could be fined up to $500. They have six months to make the change.
