An Augusta, Maine, man who set fire to a home in which two people were sleeping in an attempt to kill one of them has been sent to prison for seven years.
Jason Brown was ordered Thursday to serve seven years of a 14-year sentence, with the remainder suspended for four years' probation, after pleading guilty in Kennebec County Superior Court to arson and aggravated criminal mischief.
Prosecutors dropped a charge of attempted murder in the August 2013 fire.
Both occupants escaped safely.
Prosecutors say the 30-year-old Brown was angry because a relationship with one of the home's occupants had recently ended.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Brown said in court he was "pretty much out of my mind, heavily sedated on alcohol" when he set the gasoline-fueled fire.
