A federal judge has sentenced an Augusta man to more than two years in prison for defrauding more than a dozen banks and businesses by using altered and counterfeit checks.
Prosecutor Thomas Delahanty says 27-year-old Jacob Choate will spend 30 months in prison and three years on supervised release. Court records say Choate presented numerous phony checks to banks in central and southern Maine. The judge sentenced Choate in a Bangor courtroom on Thursday.
Judge John Woodcock says Choate defrauded eight banks, 16 payors and 11 payees. He says Choate has displayed an "unremitting degree" of criminal activity since he was 17 years old.
