A jury in Bangor, Maine is deciding if the man who led police on the longest manhunt in state history is also a murderer.
Robert Burton is charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Ginn Gebo, in her Parkman home two years ago.
Shortly after Gebo was found shot in the back, Burton went on the run. He spent 68 days running from police, hiding near camps and stealing food to survive. It triggered the longest manhunt Maine State Police have ever conducted.
Burton turned himself in and said he was innocent. He told a jury that he and Stephanie got into a fight and that there was a struggle for her gun. Burton claims his ex-girlfriend reached behind her back and accidentally shot herself.
"In my opinion, when you look at the evidence, all the stuff [the defense] was saying wasn't true," said Vance Ginn, the victim's father.
He said his family is confident that the jury will return a guilty verdict. They began deliberations at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, after an eight-day trial.
"It's in God's hands, and the jury's hands now," said Ginn.
