Opponents of National Park Proposal to Hold Rally

The park would be located east of Baxter State Park, home of Mount Katahdin

Opponents of a proposal for a new national park in northern Maine are holding a rally against the plan in Medway.

The park would be located east of Baxter State Park, home of Mount Katahdin. Opponents plan to gather at the Gateway Inn in Medway at 1 p.m. on Thursday to voice their opposition to the park. Organizers say the group will include state officials, land owners and owners of businesses involved in the forest products industry.

Opponents of the park plan say it will hurt jobs and limit recreational access. Supporters say it would drive tourism to the area and create new recreational opportunities.

The park would be made up of 75,000 acres owned by Roxanne Quimby, founder of Burt's Bees. Another 75,000 acres would be a recreation area.
