RI Gov., AG at Odds Over ‘Revenge Porn' Bill

Rhode Island's attorney general and governor are at odds over a proposal to criminalize the online sharing of nude images without a person's consent.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said Tuesday it's a "disgrace" that Gov. Gina Raimondo, a fellow Democrat, is putting "the interests of Hollywood elites" ahead of Rhode Island victims of "revenge porn" and sexual extortion.

Kilmartin wants lawmakers to pass his legislation after Raimondo vetoed it last year on free speech grounds.

The Raimondo administration has sought to add language clarifying that the activity being criminalized must be done with intent to harm. Kilmartin is calling Raimondo's proposal weak and legally flawed.

The House passed Kilmartin's version last month. The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a Tuesday hearing.

Raimondo's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
