Search Called Off for Man Missing in National Park

The search for 50-year-old Timothy Philpott began at the 47,000-acre coastal park on Thursday

Officials say the search for an Ellsworth, Maine, man believed to be missing in Acadia National Park has been called off and may not resume until the spring.

The search for 50-year-old Timothy Philpott began at the 47,000-acre coastal park on Thursday. Philpott was last seen in Ellsworth on Tuesday but his car was reportedly found in the Parkman Mountain parking area on Wednesday.

There has been no sign of him since.

Park spokesman John Kelly says the winter weather has made it difficult for the search to continue safely. The area was hit with 7 to 8 inches of snow Saturday night.

Kelly says the search, which has been reclassified as a recovery effort, won't resume until the snow is clear - which possibly may not be until the spring.
