A 52-year-old Maine man was killed in a crash in the state's sixth snowmobile-related fatality this year.
Lee resident John Dorsey was leaving his friend's house at about 9 p.m. Saturday night when he hit a tree with his snowmobile in Springfield, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
Dorsey was traveling on Buckshot Road in his 1999 Arctic Cat Panther 440 when he failed to turn a corner, according to officials. The fatal victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Dorsey's body was discovered the following morning at about 11 a.m. by a passerby, who alerted authorities. Officials said that despite taking a significant amount of damage, the snowmobile was still running.
Game wardens believe speed and alcohol appear to have contributed to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
