Maine transportation officials say a 75-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 last week was likely caused by people driving too fast for the wintry conditions.
Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot says the speed limit on the highway had been reduced to 45 miles per hour on Feb. 25 because of heavy snow in the Etna and Carmel area, but vehicles were going on average at least 10 mph faster.
He says one vehicle was clocked at 72 mph.
The speeds were based on readings from three flashing hazardous weather signs near the scene of the crash.
At least 17 people were taken to area hospitals after the crash, some with serious injuries, but there were no fatalities.
