Street Shut Down Due to “Suspicious Package” at Police Headquarters

The bomb squad is investigating

Police shut down part of Franklin Street in Portland, Maine, on Thursday evening after a "suspicious package" was left outside police headquarters and the bomb squad is investigating.

Around 3 p.m. Thursday, a construction crew working around Portland, Maine, found what they believed was a suspicious package. They decided to put that package inside their van and drive it over to the Portland Police Station.

NECN observed a hazmat robot being brought over. The robot was observed going to the back of the van, taking something out of it. NECN observed a member of the bomb squad in his gear next to the robot examining what was on the road way. Although NECN was close, we cannot see exactly what he was doing.

Police have also done a low-level evacuation of office buildings in the area. Nearby roads, including Franklin Street from Congress to Fore streets and Middle Street from India to Pearl streets, were closed to traffic.
