The principal of a southern Maine high school recommended a football player for a prestigious athletic award weeks after receiving word that the student was accused of sexually assaulting two children.

The Portland Press Herald reports
the 18-year-old Windham High School student was charged in juvenile court in November with two counts of gross sexual assault on victims younger than 8 years old.

Police say they immediately notified school administrators of the felony charges.

Approximately five weeks later, the student was recommended for the Frank J. Gaziano Offensive and Defensive Lineman Awards by Principal Chris Howell, Windham's athletic director and football coach.

The scholarship award is presented to linemen who are considered positive role models and display integrity, honesty and athletic citizenship.

The student, a finalist, received $1,000.
