Trooper Cleared by AG in Shooting Confrontation

The Maine attorney general says a state trooper acted in defense of himself and others when he shot and wounded an Ellsworth man during a June confrontation.

Trooper Scott Duff shot 50-year-old Jeffrey Barnard during the confrontation outside Barnard's home on June 1. Attorney General Janet Mills says the 20-hour standoff included Barnard firing several rounds from a rifle and throwing a Molotov cocktail at officers outside his camper.

Barnard was taken to a hospital in Bangor for treatment of a gunshot wound to his face. Mills says he was discharged two weeks later.

Mills says Barnard faces federal charges related to his possession of a firearm during the standoff.

A phone number for Barnard was disconnected. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
