Police: Speed Likely Factor in Maine Crash That Killed Teen, Injured 2 Others

A Maine teenager was killed and two others injured in a one-vehicle crash in Weld on Thursday night.

State police said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on West Side Road when the driver of a Toyota Corolla lost control, struck a tree and overturned the vehicle.

Griffyn Smith, 19, of Dixfield, a passenger in the vehicle, was killed.

The driver of the vehicle, Ethyn Buotte, 18, of Dixfield, and his 17-year-old female passenger were taken to Rumford Hospital for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said Buotte and the female passenger are students at Dirigo High School in Dixfield. Smith graduated from the school two years ago.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, but police believe speed was a factor.

It's unclear if Buotte will face charges.
