The trial of a Maine man charged with mailing cyanide to a suicidal resident of England is set to resume in federal court with witnesses.
Sidney Kilmartin has pleaded not guilty to charges of mailing injurious articles resulting in death, witness tampering and witness retaliation. His trial began Monday in Bangor and continues Tuesday.
Investigators say Kilmartin advertised and mailed a substance he said was cyanide to several suicidal people. It was really Epsom salt. He then sent the real thing to Andrew Denton, who used it to kill himself. Investigators say Kilmartin wanted to prevent Denton from going to authorities about fraud.
The government plans to bring more than 30 witnesses against Kilmartin and brought the first two Monday.
Kilmartin pleaded guilty to mail and wire fraud charges Monday.
