Man, Boy Seriously Injured in Boating Crash on Lake Winnisquam in New Hampshire

State police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash

A man and young boy were seriously injured Friday night in a boating crash on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia, New Hampshire.

State police said Brian Jackes, 32, of Belmont, was adrift at 10:30 p.m. with four passengers on board when his Moomba power boat was struck from the rear by a Fourwinns powerboat operated by a 15-year-old boy and two passengers.

Authorities said right before the impact, Jackes and a 13-year-old boy were able to jump overboard, escaping injury. Police said a 7-year-old boy who was on Jackes' boat suffered serious facial injuries. The operator of the Fourwinns, Wayne Balcom, 69 of Nashua, also sustained serious injuries.

Police said collision life jackets needed to be used when the Moomba began taking on water and capsized.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation but police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
