A man drowned in New Hampshire on Monday in an attempt to save four young children playing in a river in Bristol, according to New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol.
Authorities said the children, ages 7, 8, 10 and 13, were swimming in the pool below Profile Falls on the Smith River when one of them began struggling.
A 39-year-old Concord man, who has not been identified, jumped in to help but did not resurface.
Marine Patrol said Good Samaritans were able to search the area and remove all four children and the man.
Authorities said CPR had to be performed on the 8-year-old and the man but emergency response teams were unsuccessful in resuscitating the adult.
"Had it not been for the selfless acts of the public at Profile Falls this assuredly would have been a multi-fatality drowning," said Sergeant Joshua Dirth. "Despite water conditions being low across the state an emergency can unfold in seconds — please take the proper precautions before entering or being near the water."
Marine Patrol is urging everyone to wear a personal flotation devices, especially for children and for anyone that is not a strong swimmer.
